EDquity at the Margins is a Tennessee nonprofit corporation and an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 42-2295582. We review IEPs for families who cannot afford an advocate and we deliver free workshops on parent rights. Every family service is free.
Purpose of the position
Behavior is where IEPs fail most quietly. Behavior intervention plans describe a child instead of teaching one. This council member keeps our guidance on behavior plans current.
Responsibilities of this position
- Advise on how behavior intervention plans and functional behavior assessments should be read.
- Review guidance and workshop content covering behavior goals and supports.
- Flag material that misstates or oversimplifies behavioral practice.
Responsibilities shared by every council member
- Review our materials before they reach families. Confirm that what we publish reflects current practice in your field.
- Advise on workshop content and program design in your specialty.
- Flag guidance that has gone out of date.
- Present alongside the Executive Director at workshops and conferences if you would like to.
Required qualifications
- Current certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
- Experience with behavior planning in school settings.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with families rather than only with schools.
- Familiarity with how behavior appears in IEP documentation across states.
Time commitment
- Two to four hours a quarter.
- The council convenes twice a year. The rest of the work happens when a material needs your review.
Reports to
The Executive Director.
Term
One year, renewable. The board appoints council members. Council members are not directors.
Scope of the role
Council members do not consult on individual cases. We do not send you a child's file. We do not ask you to advise a family. One exception applies. A council member volunteering at a conference or community event may talk with parents and explain what we offer.
Advisory council members hold no vote and carry no fiduciary duty. Article V of our bylaws limits committee membership to directors, so council members do not sit on board committees. Council members work with the Executive Director. Their input reaches the board through her report.
Compensation
This is an unpaid volunteer position. We do not require a personal financial contribution.
