EDquity at the Margins is a Tennessee nonprofit corporation and an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 42-2295582. We review IEPs for families who cannot afford an advocate and we deliver free workshops on parent rights. Every family service is free.
Purpose of the position
Schools write communication goals constantly and measure them rarely. This council member keeps our guidance on those goals accurate and useful to a family reading an IEP.
Responsibilities of this position
- Advise on communication goals and on how families should read service minutes.
- Review guidance covering speech and language services and augmentative communication.
- Flag material that misstates current practice in the field.
Responsibilities shared by every council member
- Review our materials before they reach families. Confirm that what we publish reflects current practice in your field.
- Advise on workshop content and program design in your specialty.
- Flag guidance that has gone out of date.
- Present alongside the Executive Director at workshops and conferences if you would like to.
Required qualifications
- Current licensure as a speech and language pathologist.
- Experience delivering or supervising school-based services.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with augmentative and alternative communication.
- Experience explaining services to families rather than only documenting them.
Time commitment
- Two to four hours a quarter.
- The council convenes twice a year. The rest of the work happens when a material needs your review.
Reports to
The Executive Director.
Term
One year, renewable. The board appoints council members. Council members are not directors.
Scope of the role
Council members do not consult on individual cases. We do not send you a child's file. We do not ask you to advise a family. One exception applies. A council member volunteering at a conference or community event may talk with parents and explain what we offer.
Advisory council members hold no vote and carry no fiduciary duty. Article V of our bylaws limits committee membership to directors, so council members do not sit on board committees. Council members work with the Executive Director. Their input reaches the board through her report.
Compensation
This is an unpaid volunteer position. We do not require a personal financial contribution.
